Education

Before the formulation of the 1988-2003 Education Policy in The Gambia, less than 50% of Gambian children had access to schooling. The educational curriculum for grade schools is standardized across the country and is designed by educators from Gambia College. The grade-school education system follows a specific structure, starting with privately owned nursery schools for children around four or five years old. Government-directed education begins at grade one, with students entering at the age of seven. English is the primary language of instruction in schools. At the end of Upper Basic school, students are required to take a standardized exam that determines their eligibility to continue their education at Senior Secondary School. Upon passing another exam at the end of Senior Secondary School, students have the option to pursue further education at a tertiary institution or a university, provided they have the necessary financial means.

  1. Early Childhood Education Development Centres: These centers cater to the early education and development of young children before they enter grade school.

  2. Lower Basic Schools: Lower Basic Schools encompass grades one to six, providing foundational education to children.

  3. Upper Basic Schools: Upper Basic Schools cover grades seven to nine, offering a continuation of basic education with an expanded curriculum.

  4. Senior Secondary Schools: Senior Secondary Schools provide education for grades ten to twelve. At the end of this stage, students take a standardized exam to determine their eligibility to pursue further education.

  5. Tertiary Institutions: Students who pass the exam at the end of Senior Secondary School and have the financial means can choose to attend tertiary institutions, which offer specialized vocational training or diploma programs.

  6. Special Needs Schools: These schools cater to the educational needs of students with disabilities or special needs, ensuring inclusive education for all.

  7. Technical and Vocational Centres: Technical and vocational centers provide practical skills training in various fields, preparing students for specific trades and occupations.

The education system in The Gambia has undergone significant improvements over the years, aiming to enhance access and quality of education for all.
